How to Measure Your Cabinet Door Overlay
Need help finding your overlay? You’re not alone. Here’s how to get it done in less than a minute.
Method 1
Look for a Stamp
Some hinges have your overlay size printed right on them.
Open the cabinet door and take a peek at the hinge hardware. If you’re lucky, you’ll see something like ½ or ¾ printed or engraved right on the metal.
That number is your overlay. Simple as that.
Pro Tip: If you see a brand name instead of a number, search that hinge brand along with the phrase “overlay sizing chart” to find your match.
Method 2
Use a Sticky Note
No stamp? No problem. This method is quick, easy, and only takes a sticky note and a pen.
Here’s how to do it
- Close your cabinet door
- Stick a sticky note so it overlaps both the cabinet door and the face frame
- Make a line on the sticky note where the door edge ends
- Open the door and measure from the inside edge of the cabinet frame to your mark
That measurement is your overlay. You’ll likely end up with something close to ½ inch, ⅝ inch, or ¾ inch
Quick tip: If your measurement falls in between, round to the nearest standard size
